Tellicherry 'bold' is one of our four qualitypeppers from the Malabar Coast. To be allowed to be called Tellicherry, a peppercorn must meet a number of quality requirements, including size. Almost 90% of the 'malabar-peppers' does not meet that requirement. Our pepper belongs to that other 10%, and is also organically grown.

Tellicherry peppers They are named after the port town of Thalassery, which was called Tellicherry during the British era. Just like the fort they built there at the beginning of the 18th century to defend their pepper interests in India. Thalassery was the absolute center of the pepper trade even before British intervention, even before the Portuguese claimed it in the 14th century.

Our Tellicherry is briefly steamed before being dried. Tellicherry pepper is famous for its rich aroma, which can develop by leaving the berries on the plant as long as possible.

To be a Tellicherry pepper, a peppercorn must not only come from the region around Tellicherry, but must also be 4.25 mm or larger. Only then do they qualify for the designation Tellicherry Garbled Extra Bold - TGEB. Only 10% of the harvest meets the conditions for Tellicherry Extra Bold. A portion is even larger than 4.75 mm, a premium that fully Tellicherry Garbled Special Extra bold is mentioned. Tellicherrypeppers fall under the same Indian Geographical Indication of 2006 (GI), comparable to the European Geographical Indication, abbreviated in Dutch as BGI.

Our Tellicherry is the pepperberry of pepper varieties similar to the smaller Malabar.peppersIn addition to this 'normal' Tellicherry, we also offer the Wayanad Tellicherry, a special variety, also organically grown, originating from the highlands.

How does Tellicherry distinguish itself from other Malabars?

A frequently recurring question. The answer is: the size of the berry, whereby the aromas and sharpness are developed to the maximum. Moreover, this Tellicherry is  Grown organically in the Wayanad. This specific Tellicherry, made from two local pepper varieties, is renowned for its very spicy character due to its relatively high piperine content—qualities we appreciate in a Tellicherry pepper.

Why don't we sell this pepper as an organic pepper?

Because we are an online store and ship the freshly packaged products rather than handing them over physically, our peppers considered produced under our own label. Because we are not certified, we are not allowed to offer you the products as organic products.
