Piper guineense

This pepperspecies is known by various names: (African) cubebpepper, gorillapepper, and - under this name we sell this - ashantipepper. There is a lot of confusion on the internet because of this real pepperspecies to be confused with paradise grain, also known as Guinea pepper mentioned, but not real pepper. Paradise grain is a ginger-like substance.

In practice, the African cubeb is often neglected by using cubeb in African spice blends, but the Indonesian kind. There are reasons for this other than flavor. African cubeb and Indonesian cubeb share the same tail, but taste distinctly different.
