Penja pepper is the first and so far only pepperspecies that is cultivated professionally on African soil. This has only been the case since the 1950s, when the pepper was introduced there.
In addition, this pepper the first product on the African continent to be awarded the European Indication géographique protégée (IGP) label. This label applies to all pepper grown in the Penja Valley, which means that it is the only one allowed to bear that name.
