The Crushgrind© Vaasa, like the Billund, is a sustainable spice mill, not specifically designed for grinding pepper. The mill, with its glass container, is made of biocomposite material, and has a ceramic grinding element.

The design is by Sam(uel) Murley of the Danish concept developer Ideas.

The handy, thirteen-centimeter-tall Vaasa, like the Billund in our range, is an inverted mill. The mill is positioned with the grinding mechanism facing upward, preventing spillage on your countertop or tablecloth. It's designed for both commercial and domestic use. A versatile mill, it can be used not only for pepper but also for a wide variety of spices and dried herbs, allowing you to make your own fresh spice blends.

The grinding mechanism consists of a rotating ceramic element developed in the early 1990s by Ken Muff Larsen. CrushGrind® holds the patent for the ceramic grinding system, which is also used by many other major brands. is produced in Europe.

New is the availability of spare containers, ensuring your grinder lasts a long time if you happen to break a jar. You can also use the spare jar as intended, of course, to store other spices and switch between them with the grinding mechanism. It's also handy when you want to use different types of peppers at the same time. Some of these are also available in off-white (the grinder is no longer available in this color).

How the CrushGrind® works Vaasa

To fill the grinder, unscrew the top of the grinder from the glass. The fineness of the grind set yourself up by going through the Turn the top disk, clockwise for a finer setting, counterclockwise for a coarser setting.

To grind, hold the grinder upside down, hold the grinding housing, and turn the glass a quarter turn to the left or right, then make a back-and-forth motion. You'll notice that the grinder reacts very directly.

Cleaning

When you want to change spices, do so by emptying the container and turning the grinder off, grind If necessary, use some coarse (sea) salt to thoroughly clean the ceramic part. When you loosen the wheel that determines the grind, the grinding mechanism will be released, if you want to clean with water.

Ideally, do this with a stiff, dry brush. Before doing so, read the instructions on the CrushGrind website. Make sure the mechanism is completely dry before using the grinder again! The drying time is at least 24 hours.

Material

The playful design is made with a biocomposite material containing cellulose fibers from certified wood—primarily conifers—harvested from sustainably managed forests. It has a low CO2 footprint unlike biomaterials made from edible crops. The footprint for the Vaasa used biocomposite does not compete with the food production chain.

The biocomposite is based on almost 100% renewable materials with two main components:

  • cellulose fibers, from wood
  • liquid rosin (called tall oil), a residue from pulp production
