The Crushgrind© Billund is a sustainable spice mill made of biocomposite material, with a ceramic grinding element. The design is by Sam(uel) Murley of the Danish concept developer Ideas.
The design is by Sam(uel) Murley of the Danish concept developer Ideas. The Billund is the latest addition to the Danish brand's range, available in three colours: lime, paprika and masala.
The handy, twelve centimetre high Billund is, just like the Kalas from our range, an 'inverted mill'. The mill stands with the grinding mechanism facing upwards, so that you do not spill any ground on the worktop or tablecloth. It is intended for commercial and domestic use. A versatile mill, because you can use it not only for pepper, but also for a large number of spices and dried herbs, so that you can make your own spice mixtures fresh.
The grinding mechanism consists of a rotating ceramic element that was developed in the early 1990s by Ken Muff Larsen. CrushGrind® holds the patent for the ceramic grinding system, which is also used by many other major brands. The Billund is produced in Europe.
How the CrushGrind® Billund works
To fill the grinder, remove the silicone cap from the bottom of the grinder. The fineness of the grind adjust by turning the wheel, clockwise for a finer setting, counterclockwise for a coarser setting.
To grind, make you a rotating movement with the upper part. You can do with a short stroke, a movement back and forth.
Cleaning
If you want to change spices, grind some coarse (sea) salt to clean the ceramic part. When you turn the wheel that determines the grind, the grinding mechanism is released, if you want to clean it anyway.
Preferably do this with a hard, dry brush, even cleaning with water is allowed. Before you do this, read the instructions on the CrushGrind website. Make sure that the mechanism is completely dry when you use the grinder again! The drying time is at least 24 hours.

Material
The Billund is clearly inspired by the Lego mini figures, the name is derived from the place where the official Lego park is located, the Danish Billund.
The playful design is made with a biocomposite material with cellulose fibres from certified wood - mainly coniferous trees - that is harvested from sustainably managed forests. It has a low CO2 footprint unlike biomaterials made from edible crops. The biocomposite used for Billund does not compete with the food production chain.
The biocomposite consists of:
- cellulose fibers,
- liquid rosin (called tall oil), a residue from pulp production
and is biodegradable. The grinding mechanism is not. The ceramic element has a bezel made of ABS (you know this from Lego blocks), polypropylene, polyethylene and polyacetol.
Warranty
Crushgrind© gives you a 25-year warranty on the ceramic element, based on tests in which 50 kilograms of salt and 50 kilograms of peppercorns were ground in a short time.
Packaging:
The mill is delivered in a cardboard box with printed wrapping.
