The Crushgrind© Vaasa, like the Billund, is a sustainable spice grinder, not specifically designed for grinding pepper. The grinder with its glass container is made of biocomposite material and has a ceramic grinding element.

The design is by Sam(uel) Murley of the Danish concept developer Ideas. The Billund is the latest member of the Danish brand's range, available from us in two color options: this green version and an off-white, pale cream-colored version

The handy, thirteen centimeter high Vaasa is, just like the Billunds and Kalas from our range, an 'inverted mill'. The mill is positioned with the grinding mechanism facing upwards, so that you do not spill any grinding on the worktop or tablecloth. It is intended for commercial and domestic use. A versatile grinder, because you can use it not only for pepper, but also for a large number of spices, and dried herbs, so you can freshly make your own spice mixtures.

The grinding mechanism consists of a rotating ceramic element developed by Ken Muff Larsen in the early 1990s. CrushGrind® is the patent holder of the ceramic grinding system, which is also used by many other major brands. Crushgrind is produced in Europe.

What is new is the availability of spare containers, which means your mill will have a long life if you break a glass. You can of course also use the spare glass as intended, to store other spices and to change spices with the grinding mechanism. Also useful when you want to use various types of pepper next to each other.

How the CrushGrind® Vaasa works

To fill the grinder, twist the top of the grinder off the glass. You can adjust the fineness of the grind by turning the top dial, clockwise for a finer setting, counterclockwise for a coarser one.

To grind, hold the grinder upside down, hold the grinding body and turn the glass a quarter turn to the left or right, then make back and forth movements. You will notice, the mill responds very immediately.

Cleaning

If you want to change spices, do so by emptying the container and emptying the grinder, grinding some coarse (sea) salt if necessary to completely clean the ceramic part. When you loosen the wheel that determines the grind, the grinding mechanism is released if you want to clean it with water.

Preferably do this with a hard, dry brush. Before you do that, read the instructions for use on the CrushGrind site. Make sure that the mechanism is completely dry when you use the mill again! The drying time is at least 24 hours.

Material

The playful design is made with a biocomposite material with cellulose fibers from certified wood - mainly coniferous trees - that is felled from sustainably managed forests. It has a low CO2 footprint, unlike biomaterials made from edible crops. The biocomposite used for the Vaasa does not compete with the food production chain.

The biocomposite is based on almost 100% renewable materials with two main components:

  • cellulose fibers, from wood
  • liquid rosin (called tall oil), a residue from pulp production

The individual jars

Matching pots are available separately, which also serve as a container for the mill. These pots are available per set of two, but also per piece.

See the corresponding storage jar with green lid.
